Back To The Kingdom
I used to travel back to Fife from Glasgow every weekend for over a year for work, but since getting a transfer to a different store and now living full time in Glasgow for the past 8 months, it's a rare occasion I actually have enough free time to make the two-train trip back to 'The Kingdom'. Having not been back for just over a month I finally had some time off work to fit in the trip last week so off I went to see the fam-i-lam.
First things first, there is something undeniably therapeutic about train journeys. There's something about watching rolling fields fly past me at 50mph that I find so calming. In fact I used to do the bulk of my creative writing for uni on the train because I found it the easiest place to concentrate and find inspiration from.
As soon as I got home I was welcomed by my two (literally) wailing dogs. My main man, Buster, just turned 8 years old last month and for a good half an hour he just would not leave my side. If there were ever a way to make me feel guilty for not making it home more often, his sad amber coloured eyes would be it - no question.
I don't know what it is about coming home that just feels like a kind of mini holiday for me - maybe it's that I don't get to cook (my parents do not trust me to make anything edible - how they think I have survived the past 4 years as a student is beyond me) - whatever it is, I get more work done here than I do in my own flat.
Then there's the pup cuddles, and the visits to various family members to prove that I'm still alive and kickin' and the watching of tv shows you don't get in your flat because you don't have a TV like Say Yes To The Dress... a favourite of both my mum and me just for the ridiculous American brides and bad dresses.
I guess it's kind of like hitting pause on my Glasgow life and taking a few days just to catch up with myself without having to worry about paying for bills and food and everything else that I now have to deal with as an adult... Welcome to the real world, I guess.
So for times when I just need to slither back to my old, less responsible life - I guess I'll just head back to the kingdom.
Is there anywhere you go to give yourself a pick-me-up? Let me know in the comments
