Edinburgh: A lost bank card, Modern One & The Glasshouses
I've said it before and no doubt I will say it again - whenever Kelly is involved there's drama!
Yesterday we headed through to Edinburgh for the day to see some art and some plants, grabbing a Starbucks for the train journey - it was my first Pumpkin Spice Latte of the season and boy did it taste like heaven in a cup! My tastebuds were oohing and aahing with every sip - yum! Kelly opted for the Pumpkin Spice Frappucinno which somehow ended up tasting kind of like bubblegum - figure that one out!?
When we got to Edinburgh we decided to walk to the Modern Galleries because we literally never go there, we're always opting for the galleries in the city centre like Fruitmarket or Talbot Rice. We ended up going down through the very picturesque Dean Village and accidentally circling back on ourselves by taking the Leith Walkway down past the river - worth it for the gorgeous 18th Century buildings and houses!
Eventually we made it to Modern One where we got all the way to the lockers in the basement when Kelly had the realisation that she'd lost her bank card. Then followed the frantic checking of pockets, bag and wallet before heading back up the stairs and out of the building to retrace our steps. By some bizarre miracle it was exactly where she thought it would be - on the corner of a street where we'd stopped to check where we were going on google maps. Hopefully that's all the drama served for Kelly on her adventures with me - they do say bad things happen in threes so hopefully 2 lost phones and a lost bank card is the end of it!
We came to Modern One to see the Artist Rooms which is currently Ed Ruscha - my idea, not Kelly's - but if I'm honest I preferred the group exhibition currently on in the ground floor of the building titled NOW.
There are works by Nathan Coley, including The Lamp of Sacrifice, 286 Places of Worship, Edinburgh 2004 (2004) and Tate Modern on Fire (2017) pictured below, as well as those by Louise Hopkins, Tony Swain, Pete Horobin and more.
This suit titled Acrobat (1982) by Pete Horobin was a favourite of mine as well as a beautifully shot and quirky film by Rivane Neuenschwander and Cao GuimarĂ£es titled The Tenant (2010) which follows a bubble as it travels around an empty apartment, sometimes bouncing off of walls or grazing doors yet never popping. For this film alone I would recommend going before the show closes on the 24th of September!
The Ed Ruscha room, if I'm being honest, wasn't that amazing. Although I liked some of the pieces, overall I just feel like Ruscha's work is missing something - but then I'm a sucker for expressive paintings and literally squealed when I saw two John Bellany paintings sitting in a room opposite some works by Ken Currie.
Next was the Botanic Gardens - this time Kelly's choice! I hadn't been inside the glasshouses since I was in primary school so it was really nice to be back and see all the different plant species and environments and for £6.50 including donation it's a pretty cheap day out!
I think Kelly feels about plants, especially the carnivorous variety, how I feel about John Bellany paintings so at least we're even on that front of the day's adventures!
Here's some of the photos we took in the glasshouses:
BAG - CLAUDIA CANOVA | JACKET - MISSGUIDED | TSHIRT - H&M | SHOES - VANS
This is what's left of the Corpse Flower which bloomed a few months ago. |
Note to self - banana leaf stalks are rock solid but if you nudge them you can make the leaves wobble! It's the little things in life that put a smile on your face!
And thus concludes our trip to Edinburgh! We walked back into the city centre and got our respective trains home, mine to Fife to see my family for the night and Kelly back to Glasgow!
Until our next adventure let's hope Kelly doesn't lose anything else!!
